EMAIL Hell - As Predicted in the Spam Version of Revelations

by Ferdinand T Cat

A lot of times, spam EMAIL is just plain stupid, but every now and then someone comes up with a brand of fraud that is truly amazing. This morning, I received an EMAIL from Alasdair Laurie. Alasdair includes in his EMAIL links to three news articles, including this one. The news articles are about a tsunami due to devastate the east coast of America, but you only have to read a few sentences to realize that the evidence for the tsunami comes from the book of Revelations rather than any sort of seismic analysis.

Mr. Laurie's trick here is the use of a service called Webwire to get his message distributed as a news release. Thanks to Webwire, absolutely anybody can write anything in a press release and have it broadcast to the financial news feeds and indexed by the appropriate search engines. God help us if Sebastian Foss finds out about this.

Anyway, the new thing here is that someone has found a way to take complete misinformation and disguise it as a legitimate news story.

Um, hang on a minute...

Sorry, it turns out there's nothing new here. Forget the whole thing.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
