Notes from Ferdy - In Which I Direct a Hissy Fit at Joe Gannon of Cat Fancy Magazine

Dear Mr. Gannon

I am totally appalled by your article Hi-Tech Fun in the January 2007 issue of Cat Fancy. While there is nothing untrue in the article, you completely understated the vast power cats have accumulated in the blogging sector.

For one thing, my blog has had over a quarter million readers in the same time span that http://www.tian.cc/jane has been online. One of the reasons is that I am a participant in the weekly Carnival of the Cats. The carnival happens every Sunday, and bloggers all over the world submit pictures of their cats to it. It is the most successful blog carnival in history, and it is simply criminal not to mention it.

There is also the Friday Ark at http://themodulator.org. This is a weekly roundup of pictures of all sorts of animals. Two-thirds of the submissions are cat pictures, a testament to the extent to which cat-lovers infest the blogosphere.

You also did not mention my very own Cat Lovers page, which includes a Frapper map and a permanent feed of articles about cats.

When I first started blogging, the idea of a blog written by a cat was considered lame, but now it’s an accepted practice and even celebrities are getting in on the act. As I have pointed out numerous times on my own blog, cats have a different view of the world that allows them to see things you miss when you interpret events using merely human eyes.

And of course, we can’t forget GigoloKitty, who has turned cat pictures into an entirely new art form, Laurence Simon’s Ask the Cats feature, and the web site for the book Gian Carlo.

Anyway, the important thing here is you had an excellent opportunity to give me free publicity, and you missed it! Don’t worry, however: I am a very forgiving feline and if you mail me a large bribe, payable in grocery coupons for products high in protein, I will forget the whole thing and not denounce you in public.
