Notes from Ferdy - Saddam Hussein's Final Exit
I am who I am, and I take no pleasure in the death of Saddam Hussein. Killing vermin is a job, not an art.
Layla of The Hill Chronicles has the reaction of the New York Times to Saddam's death. The Times comes as close as it possibly can to saying that the Iraqis are no better off than they were before the invasion.
Toppling Saddam Hussein did not automatically create a new and better Iraq. Executing him won’t either.
Hussein was a seriously murderous lunatic. When seriously murderous lunatics are in charge, the crime rate tends to be low, because the government is willing to kill not only the guilty parties, but their friends, relatives, and anyone else who wears the same kind of headgear. Was there chaos in the streets of Germany during Hitler's reign? No. Are people killing each other in North Korea? No. Were Serbs killing Bosnians when Tito ruled Yugoslavia? No.
The problem is, Iraq faces two paths into the future. One is the rule of law, and the other is the rule of terror. The violence in Iraq is not anti-American street disagreements boiling over into riots, it's improvised bombs and militias storming mosques. The U.S. occupation force is responsible for these problems only because we are unwilling to engage in wholesale atrocities. If the Times thinks otherwise, it's because they have a fairy-tale image of life under Saddam. Trust me, Saddam's method of keeping the peace had nothing to do with a New Diplomatic Offensive.
We can't afford to forget that.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
