Confused Americans for Truth - Babysitting a Civil War
Local hero and United States Senator Barack Obama commented on the Today Show about the President's new plans for Iraq. In particular, he intoned what has been a recurring theme in the criticism of our presence there.
"We're not going to baby sit a civil war," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told NBC's "Today" Show.
I know that a lot of people think very highly of Senator Obama, but I think he's confused about an important point. A civil war is about things like states' rights or who gets to be king. Iraq isn't about that. It's about paying back blood with blood on strictly ethnic boundaries. They don't call that civil war, they call it ethnic cleansing.
Now, I don't claim to completely understand the Democratic mind, but I do know they are pretty seriously opposed to ethnic warfare. In particular, I can't imagine any Democrats wanting to be remembered as part of the gang that pulled us out just in time to create another Rwanda.
So far, the Democrats are restricting themselves to symbolic gestures like press statements and non-binding resolutions. It would be nice if every now and then the Democrats would do something that actually gives hope to the ordinary people in Iraq rather than to the terrorists, but when push comes to shove, their symbolic gestures are much less disastrous than their actual deeds.
Just in case they decide to escalate beyond symbolic gestures, however, it's important that they understand the stakes: this is not a civil war. It's something far, far worse.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
