Windows Hell - The Worst is Over
We are finished with the rebirthing process on Bruce's laptop. Here are a few things we've learned.
- If you work for a government lab, and they tell you they have a great new upgrade for your VPN software, shoot yourself in the foot. Hopefully, while you're convalescing, the madness will pass. Just remember this simple equation: More Security = More Problems.
- The Hewlitt-Packard Pavilion zd8000 laptop is a large, sturdy, and powerful machine, but if you fall asleep while you're working on it, you'll have nightmares that you're trapped in a burning house.
- Every time you have to re-install a copy of Trend Micro PC-Cillin, you have to register it under a different name. After 3 names, you have to buy another copy of the product. It's a great security suite, but it's not for someone who is trying different products to figure out how to punch a brand-new, high-security VPN upgrade through his own firewall.
- Paragon Backup 8.5 has a nifty feature that allows you to look at the files inside a backup image so you can restore them individually. This is absolutely essential when you're trying to selectively restore data from an old backup. Unfortunately, if you try to use this feature, the stupid thing crashes. Thus, you can back up your files, but you can't restore them. This severely limits the utility of the Paragon Backup software.
- Do not try to install Windows Media Player 11 unless you've already installed Internet Explorer 7 and the IE7 Flash plugin. Otherwise, when you try to access any of the built-in music stores, you'll get all sorts of nasty and confused error messages.
- If you have stereo bluetooth headphones that use the high-performance audio profiles (A2DP and AVRCP), make sure the bluetooth radio on your PC uses the IVT Bluesoliel software.
Bruce is feeling a little burned out right now, but we will be back to full strength tomorrow.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
