The Cat's Meow - 02/27/07: Humor
There are two types of humor-- liberal humor, which is about how silly they are, and conservative humor, which is about how silly we are. What matters is not the politics of the joke, but the underlying assumption of the conservative movement that we are all fallible.
I got the idea for this one after viewing the teaser video for the Half Hour News Hour. The punch line was delivered by Ann Coulter. Bruce and I laughed hysterically, but it was because we knew the secret: Ann was making fun of the infamous statement that got her fired from National Review Online: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity". Rush's statement that the Army Corps of Engineers was trying to unfreeze Hell had the same self-mocking trait.
Liberals can gleefully make fun of other people because it fits their world view. But to make conservative humor work, it has to have that self-mocking edge. Doing fake news is easy, but Scrappleface appeals to millions because he delivers the fake news as if he doesn't quite understand what's going on.
So, as you go out into the world to spread laughter, remember the most important thing: as conservatives, we see ourselves as part of humanity, not above it, and (except for me) we are all fallible.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

"...as conservatives, we see ourselves as part of humanity..."
Wow! Newsflash! Ferdy sees himself as part of humanity! Such humility, such self-abasement!
I'm in awe.
