Pet Food News - About the Menu Foods Pet Food Recall

by Ferdinand T Cat

As a public service, here are my recommendations on what to do about the Menu Foods recall.

This all began because when Menu Foods was performing routine taste tests on its latest shipments. Twenty-five cats and fifteen dogs participated in the tests; nine of the cats died. In the wake of the recall, one dog and four more cats have died. The food seems to cause kidney damage, and cats are particularly vulnerable to that sort of thing. Menu Foods believes the problem is in the wheat gluten they used, but at this point it's all conjecture.

To find out if the pet food you use is part of the recall, check this web site. It's worth noting that the food is not a death sentence. Less that a quarter of the participants in the taste test were affected. Given that we now know what is happening, survival chances are much higher if you can get to your veterinarian in time.

Katy looking up.jpgIt's worth noting that The Other Cat (shown at left giving God a dirty look), is currently 16 years old and has survived for three years on one-half of one kidney. We're not talking about lolling around on your deathbed survival, either. It's survival with a spryness limited only by her arthritis. Bruce thinks that love is a big factor, but I believe she's simply too mean and stubborn to die.

Either way, the point is that there's hope if you consult your vet immediately.

Tammy Bruce is keeping track of the latest developments here. One of the points she makes is that Menu supplies ingredients to a lot of pet foods not on the list. Purina, for example, is recalling a batch of its Mighty Dog pouches because they were manufactured at Menu Foods.

I hope this helps. If there are any major developments, I will post them in a follow-up article.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

Liath, Duncan and Bitsy noticed that Iams is on the list, but they eat dry only and the list seems to be only wet food... They all breathed small sighs of relief.

Who, Ferdinand, have your pet Bruce read you this article:

CNN story: Pet Food Recall

"ALBANY, New York (AP) -- Rat poison has been found in pet food blamed for the deaths of at least 16 cats and dogs, a spokeswoman for the State Department of Agriculture and Markets said Friday.

Spokeswoman Jessica Chittenden would not identify the chemical or its source beyond saying it was a rodent poison"

That is not cool.

Ooops... forgot that this site doesn't take HTML. I'm sooo not a superior life form.

I’m sorry to hear that so many people have lost a pet.

In Canada, two actions have started against Menu Foods. You can check out http://www.menufoodsclaim.com for more information on how to join the class action lawsuit.

Your rendition of the story may not be accurate. There is another story that is more plausible. Menu Foods began receiving complaints about pet illnesses and deaths - owners were concerned that the cause was the pet food. Menu Foods did not immediately have samples analysed. They instead, fed 40-50 "test" animals the tainted food. Once the test animals started dying at a rate of about 1 in six, that's when they issued a recall.

Please sign our petition against Menu Foods and their practice of animal testing. There are advanced, more ethical technologies available to identify whether food is tainted (and what with?). We don't force people to eat tainted spinach, do we?
