Pet Food News - Dog and Cat Deaths Spark Pet Food Recall
Menu Foods, which produces pet food under many different brand names, including IAMS and Eukanuba, is recalling some of its products. For a complete list of the affected brands, check this web site. Only certain production lots are suspected, so even if you have been using one of the recalled brands, it's possible you're still safe.
Pass the word along.

The cause of death in each case was kidney failure. If that is the case, a prescription kidney diet from your veterinarian would help, or worst case, home dialysis. In any event, your vet would know.

We just this afternoon had to take our small dog to the Vet, she was peeing blood it started last night what should we found out the food she has been eating is on the list, what should we tell the vet?

Tell your vet you believe your dog has been poisoned by the Menu Foods products. The exact problem with the products are unknown, except that they cause kidney failure, so the standard procedure for improving kidney health should help. The Other Cat has been surviving on one-half of one kidney for several years thanks to the Purina kidney diet products, so there is hope.

Menu Foods is no longer the problem. The Chinese company apparently sold tainted wheat gluten to multiple vendors. If your cat is having problems and your cat food list wheat gluten as an ingredient, tell your vet.

Her daddy was half Rottweiller and half Bull Mastiff. He passed away two years ago of old age. He was 15 years old. Her mother was full blooded Rottweiller and passed away at the age of 3 with heart failure. RoseMary was 1 in a litter of 14. Only 3 pups survived. She was born in my closet on November 27th 1998. I have been with this pup every single day of her life. I know her inside out. She expects constant attention and I give it to her. I don't go on long walks with her but we do take many walks. She likes to dig and I like to watch her. So it was a shock to me the first time she lay down about halfway through a walk. From there is went from bad to worse. When I found out about the dog food recall I was happy to see that Alpo was not on it. I even emailed them to thank them for it. She got weaker, she drank an excessive amount of water, she panted, she stared vomiting and had diarrhea. I couldn't sleep. I stayed up with her, spraying water on her to cool her down and letting her lick ice cubes that I held for her in my hand. I found out a few days before I took her to the vet that Alpo had a recall and immediately returned all the dog food to the store where I bought it. The lady in charge of returns had no knowledge of the recall nor did the assistant manager or the manager. However, the manager contacted the main office and THEY KNEW ABOUT IT YET THEY HADN'T CONTACTED THE STORES AND TOLD THEM TO PULL THE PRODUCT! THE PRODUCT REMAINED ON THE SHELF FOR AT LEAST A WEEK AFTER THAT.
She still got worse. I took her to the vet. They did a worm test and a blood test. I was given hook worm medicine and heart worm protection (she was negative for heart worms). Having been raised on Alpo, canned and dry, she wanted her dog food. The recall numbers I memorized and checked the bottom of each can. They still carried the canned, but not the canned with gravy. I thought it was safe, they said it was. She showed no improvement, so I took her back to the vet. I was told she had a heart condition common in Rottweillers and would be not live past 3 years old. I told the vet she was 8. She responded "Whoa." Then informed me that her condition might cause sudden death. Since her mother died suddenly at 3 years and 11 siblings had died I thought it made sense. So I brought her home to die. I took vidoes and lots of pictures (that are hard for me to even look at now) and saved them in my email. She lost lots of weight. On Monday, the 28th of May, she started throwing up minutes after she ate and she wouldn't eat much. Tuesday, the 29th she ate a little that morning , then threw up. By this time her eyes were sunk in her head and I had to use Q-Tips to get the gunk out of them, alot of gunk. Wednesday, the 30th, she ate nothing. I sat up with her. I cried and I prayed. She was starving to death because she couldn't keep anything on her stomach. I could not imagine a more horrible death. Thursday morning, the 31st, I did something I swore I would never do, but I saw no other way to save her from starving to death. I made her inhale marijuana smoke. I had fixed her some pork steak earlier (her favorite "junk" food) and within minutes she started eating it. I stopped giving her the marijuana smoke the following week and she has returned to almost normal. She has literly came back from the dead, but she has not eaten anything I did not fix since then. She has some spunk back. She growls at my husband just like she used to and eats only what we eat. I spent almost $500 dollars on vet bills and they lied to me about what was wrong with her. I am so glad I didn't have the money to take her back to the vet because they would have killed her. She still pants at times and I cool her down by giving her ice cubes and misting her with water. I watch her all the time, fearing she may have a set back. I get up several times at night to check on her. It is a miracle she is still alive.
