Adventures with Bruce - New Plots Needed for Fantasy and Science Fiction
Bruce reads a lot of books, mostly science fiction and fantasy. Lately, he's been noticing a disturbing sameness. Aside from the occasional military science fiction series, more and more tales of mankind's future tend to involve love stories centered around people with telepathic powers. Frequently, the power is described as a Gift, and the lovers are constantly wrapping it around stuff.
The situation is even worse in fantasy fiction, where the Gifted are generally the last of their kind thanks to some persecution by a transparently allegorical monotheistic religious cult. Out of billions of people, the only two who can save the world are a guy and a girl who've never met, one with forbidden powers, and one with political connections. The only real mystery is how many nights of passion they'll have before they defeat the Powers of Darkness.
This has got to stop, people! Every time Bruce gets his New For You! email from Amazon.com he makes a pitiful mewling noise and hides under his desk. While he's under his desk, he can't go to the refrigerator to get me a cheese snack.
So, if you have any suggestions for fiction that breaks this awful Romeo-and-Juliet mold, please contact me immediately. Bruce is especially looking for a story about a guy who cheats on a girl and is then brutally murdered by the girl's father.
Any help is appreciated.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
