Confused Americans for Truth - A Rebuttal to Don Surber on Country & Western Lyrics
In item (3) of this post, Don Surber complains about the Carrie Underwood song Before He Cheats.
Carrie Underwood has a song about taking a baseball bat to a guy’s truck. That’s just not right.
In the song, Carrie talks about the damage she's done to her boyfriend's car while he's cheating on her with a girl he picked up in a bar. Ordinarily, I am opposed to violence for purposes of revenge, but in this case what Carrie describes is a humanitarian act of mercy.
See, a lot of girls in Carrie's situation have old-fashioned Dads. Given the situation with the car, Carrie's father will be devoting all his time to keeping his baby girl out of jail. This will give the boyfriend time to put himself in a location where the Dad can't find him. Carrie may actually have saved this poor boy's life.
Trust me. I may not know a lot about romance, but I am a world-class expert on old-fashioned Dads.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

I don't know-- I'm not enraged by the song or anything, but the lyrics leave doubt in my mind as to whether the guy she's talking about actually cheated. It's a laundry list of things he's "probably" doing, with no indication that she's actually seen him doing any of it. For all the listener knows, his brother borrowed the truck and is wooing some bimbo.
I go into detail in my own weblog. http://hobbesian.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html#816956960728385775#816956960728385775

Well, in the music video it's pretty clear the boyfriend really is cheating.
Honestly, I don't believe in revenge, but I do believe in having fun with the whole father/daughter thing. Living here, I'm heavily immersed in it on a daily basis.
