Confused Americans for Truth - Keep in Mind What We Don't Know

by Ferdinand T Cat

A lot of news stories pass by without comment from me, either because I don't have anything original to say or because I can't find enough evidence to back up my opinion. This time it's a little of both: I have no idea what really happened at Virginia Tech today, though I'm willing to buy even at this early date that the man who went on a killing spree did so because he was mad at his girlfriend. My theory is that all guys who go on killing sprees do so because they can't get a date.

If this were one of those TV crime dramas, the police would be heroically keeping the press and other onlookers at bay, and we don't mind so much because we're following the cops and we see what they see.

But in the non-televised world, what everybody needs most is proof that This Won't Happen to Them. To meet this need, every news outlet has to get the facts out as fast as possible, regardless of what relationship it has to verifiable truth. The truth is that if you're witnessing a singular act, your memory is going to play tricks on you, and these are exactly the kind of tricks that lead people to believe that the Pentagon was hit by a missile on September 11.

So, I'm going to wait before I claim to understand what happened, and I'm going to wait before I start criticizing the school's reaction to the crisis. Instead, I will devote all my resources to criticizing anything a politician says about how to prevent this from happening again. See, we still don't know what happened. We just know little pieces of the puzzle.

That's not nearly enough to give us the big picture.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
