Confused Americans for Truth - Nancy Pelosi and the Patriotism Problem

It turns out that Hamas and Islamic Jihad feel House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is doing good work. For some time, I and others have been arguing that the political antics of the Democrats are helping the terrorists. I don't think anyone is surprised that the terrorists feel the same way.

In the past, when people have criticized Ms. Pelosi about her pro-terrorist policies, she has lashed out with the now-familiar cry that it's wrong to impugn her patriotism. This has become so commonplace that it, too, is no longer surprising.

But the truth is that it doesn't matter if the Speaker of the House is patriotic, unpatriotic, or acting out of love for her grandchildren. Those are emotional states. Emotions have nothing to do with the effects of foreign policy decisions. If I kill a rabbit, my emotional state at the time has no effect on the rabbit: the rabbit is still dead. What Democrats need to do is explain to us how we benefit from all these dead rabbits. It's obvious that defeating the terrorists would be of benefit to ourselves and the people of Iraq, but it's not clear to me how helping the terrorists is going to fix the general problem of loonies who think revenge murders are some sort of holy sacrament.

If Democrats are having problems separating their emotions from their foreign policy ideas, they need psychotherapy, not an apology from the Bush Administration. Bruce knows the names of many talented psychotherapists-- some of whom discovered new and important types of mental illness while treating him-- and I will gladly pass those names on to any Democratic member of the House or Senate who contacts me via EMAIL.

In the meantime, I must insist that the Democrats stay away from foreign policy decisions until they're able to think clearly about it.

It's the only logical thing to do.
