Notes from Ferdy - Dog Bites Man, Sun Rises in East, Chinese Toothpaste Contains Poison Additive
The FDA has no evidence that any of the tainted toothpaste has been imported into the United States, but they are not taking any chances. Toothpaste exported from China to Panama and the Dominican Republic have been found to contain diethyline glycol (DEG), an industrial chemical similar to glycerin. Like glycerin, DEG tastes sweet and thickens liquids. Unlike glycerin, DEG is a deadly poison.
The rational response to this is to stop buying from China until they clean up their act. This, however, would be bad for business. Apparently, too many corporations have profit pictures that depend upon cheap Chinese imports.
That may be true, but a capitalist economy is constantly changing and adapting, and we can recover from a sudden import shock. After all, we recovered from 9/11.
In the short run, you can protect the big corporations by forcing import inspections at taxpayer expense, but in the long run that will force up the prices of Chinese products in any case, and now the consumer not only has to pay the higher price, but has to do it with a higher tax bite being removed from his or her paycheck. It's a losing game for everybody except the occasional politician who gets to campaign on a tough, pro-consumer voting record.
That's not how you'll see this reported in the media. Regulation is supposed to be a way of screwing big business, not screwing the consumer. But in fact, regulation allows corporations to grow fat and happy without worrying about the future: deregulation of air travel led to lower prices for consumers, but also caused many airlines to go bankrupt.
So don't get tricked by sneaky liberals and their attempts to protect big business at consumer expense. Tell them that if their big business buddies can't compete, we're better off without them. And if liberals refuse to abandon their infatuation with regulations, throw them out and replace them with conservatives who won't be tempted.
It's time for a little economic tough-love.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

I agree, we need some economic tough love. They have been killing out cats and dogs, now it's us.

Oh, yeh, and how's Diogenes' search for an honest man going? I'd say he has a better chance than we have of finding enough genuine, honest conservative politicians to make a difference and then getting them elected...
*sigh*
