Pet Food News - Why We Should Trust the Chinese
You may remember some time back I reported that the bad wheat gluten had been exported by a Chinese textile company. We now know why: this enabled them to dodge the standard inspection process for food exports. See, one doesn't expect to find a crate of wheat gluten on the shipping dock of a textile company.
What we have here is the exact opposite of a typical Hollywood movie plot: a bunch of big corporations (in this case the pet food companies) take a bath to save the public from the actions of a few greedy small businesses.
Lest you think this is some sort of covert culinary terrorism, the Chinese people get poisoned by unscrupulous food companies all the time. See, here in America, we accept that most of the stuff we buy is the real thing because if even one American gets sick there will be hell to pay. In China, the fine for food fraud is around $3900, which is a mere pittance.
As a conservative, I would argue that American companies need to voluntarily stop buying stuff from China until the Chinese get their act together, and that the companies who have lost millions of dollars in destroyed inventory should demand recompense from the exporters really responsible for this mess.
Unfortunately, the 2006 election proved that the American public is tired of that kind of thinking. So here's my new, more enlightened proposal for insuring food product safety.
- Nancy Pelosi should visit China to tell Xuzhou Anying and Binzhou Futian that we're willing to listen to them.
- Congress should pass a law requiring the Bush Administration to de-fund the Food and Drug Administration starting in July.
- Harry Reid should launch a Senate investigation to determine whether or not the Bush Administration cooked intelligence to make it look like Chinese food imports were a legitimate threat.
Hey, if it works for Iraq it should work for China, right?
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
