Confused Americans for Truth - That is Palestine's Problem

by Ferdinand T Cat

In the film Gandhi, Mohammed Ali Jinnah is talking about his plan to create an Islamic state on the Indian sub-continent. Somebody points out to him that his proposed nation would consist of two pieces separated by 1000 miles of hostile territory. Jinnah replies "That is Pakistan's problem." It was indeed a problem and the former East Pakistan became the independent nation of Bangladesh in 1972.

Similarly, the Palestinian National Authority ruled two regions: the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian zones on the Jordan West Bank. It now appears that there will be a Palestinian State on the West Bank and a permanent terrorist homeland in the Gaza Strip. This is a result of the Gaza pullout.

When Israel pulled out of the Gaza Strip, some hailed it as a real opportunity for peace, while others called it a horrible betrayal. Instead, an odd segregation developed. Gaza has always been the news-making region of Palestine, while the West Bank more or less lives quietly. At the time of the pullout, the Gaza strip unemployment rate was 30% while in the West Bank it was 17%. Part of Hamas's strength comes from the fact that they provide social welfare services to the many poor people in the Strip. But paying people to be poor and helpless is a money-losing proposition. It makes the benefactors popular, but it doesn't do one thing to alleviate the economic problems. What Gaza needs is infrastructure it can use to help its economy grow. Part of that was lost in the looting after the Israelis left. The rest is being destroyed even as speak.

So, in the absence of an occupier, Gaza has become a terrorist state, while the occupied West Bank remains relatively quiet. There is an important lesson there for the people who say we should abandon Iraq.

For now, I'm hoping that the West Bank is watching, and that the Palestinians there realize there are worse things than having Israeli soldiers providing security. That would be nice. It would be even nicer if the rest of the world noticed that there are worse things than living in the midst of infidels.

In the meantime, Palestine has a problem.

Respectfully submitted,

Who is going to miss Fatah? I certainly won't

I heard on Fox this a.m. that the boycotted U.S. funds we've been holding since Hamas was voted into the parliament, will now be released and will "GO DIRECTLY TO THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE."

What a pitiful thing that we would send a single cent over there, because it just further victimizes the people. If they die, if they starve...sooner or later they will revolt against their revolting leaders. If people are going to be sacrificed, why not let it be to better the next generation. As it is now, the money buys weapons and people suffer. No money, no weapons, some die then they all rise up.

Sigh!
