Ferdy at the Movies - A Major Cinematic Disaster in the Making

by Ferdinand T Cat

If you like science fiction and you're a movie buff, then it almost certainly follows that you're a fan of Mystery Science Theatre 3000, the show in which a human host and a crew of robots make fun of old movies. The TV show folded in 2004, but the concept lives on in the form of a new service called RiffTrax, run by MST3K head writer Michael Nelson.

Unlike MST3K, Rifftrax doesn't need to obtain the rights for the movies it makes fun of. A riff track is an MP3 file you download for a small fee somewhere around $2. You then play the MP3 while watching a DVD for the original movie. Bruce and Nate are really enamored of this concept, but there is a problem: the funniest riff tracks are the ones for really awful movies like Troll 2 and Plan 9 from Outer Space. Since Bruce and Nate like playing the riff tracks over and over again, this means they end up buying these positively awful DVDs.

In the past week, Bruce has played Eragon about five times and I personally didn't even want to see it once. Earlier today, Troll 2 arrived from Amazon.com. God only knows how many times he's going to be playing that one.

You see the problem here. There is now a good reason for buying DVDs of bad movies. In the crazed logic of modern Hollywood, it's only a matter of time before the studio heads notice this and they decide to make bad movies on purpose. Heck, maybe it's already started: that would explain the live-action version of Aeon Flux.

Anyway, you get the idea. If you live with a movie buff, consider yourself forewarned.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
