Catblogging - Superior Life Form Comforts the Dying
Though cats can not smell as well as dogs, we can smell more things than humans do. We are also good at observing quirks of human behavior that humans consider beneath notice. As a result, we can learn things that make us appear to be psychic.
So it is that Oscar the Cat of the Steere House nursing home is able to predict which patients are about to die.
A human who observes a pattern in the world will strive to understand why it happens. This is because humans want to be able to control their own environment. You would want to know why a person who is about to die breathes in a certain way so you can make that person live longer. Cats, on the other hand, don't try to understand the world, we just try to live in it. This is a consequence of being much lower on the food chain than humans. We also think differently: if scientists were to try to find out how Oscar predicts death, they would be hampered by the tacit assumption that Oscar is keying off one thing, when in fact a cat can remember a dozen triggers for a single behavior.
For example, in this house we have three cameras of various ages and capabilities. When I'm trying to sleep and I hear any one of the three distinct sounds of a flash unit powering up, I know I need to cover my eyes.

Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

My human read me this story, too. I think your explanation makes a lot of sense. We cats see, hear, and smell things that humans can't.
