Under the Peg - And The Star Fell Up

by Peg-Eye Nate

Go see this movie! In a generic and very definitive sense, you should go see Stardust. You may experience a brief moment of panic when you see the previews full of "Chosen One" movies, in which the chosen ones complain about whether or not they are the ones the prophecies are actually talking about. Fortunately, that sort of whining ends at the Paramount logo. The story takes place in the mid 1800's, about 150 years ago according to the narrator (an automatic plus for a movie as I mentioned before). The story centers on a young lad named Tristan (Charlie Cox) who lives in a small town in England called Wall. Not far from the town is a wall from which the town gets its name, and on the other side of the wall (it is said) there is another world. On the night the story begins, the king of this other world gives his sons a task: the son who finds and restores his ruby necklace will become the next king. He sends the necklace away, and the necklace knocks a star down from the sky.

Back in the village of Wall, Tristan sees the star and pledges to bring it back to show his love for a girl he fancies. He ends up embarking on a long and dangerous journey, fraught with peril, sky pirates, witches, struggles of succession, and ghosts of dead princes. But through it all, Tristan is only concerned with impressing his girl.

The characters made this a great movie for me. Let's face it: Young Boy Questing for Love has been done a hundred times, but this boy managed to avoid the classic mistakes of so many lesser questers. He never complains about what he's gotten himself into, he never asks "Why me?" and he never loses sight of his goal. The characters all have real emotions just like you and I do. There is no divine providence in this movie. Tristan is not some sacred champion chosen by gods, or an unrecognized prince driven to become king. In the middle of the movie, he spends a week learning how to use a sword, and instead of being the greatest swordsman in the kingdom, he gets the crap kicked out of him by a 200-year-old woman. It makes perfect sense, and we need more of that.

Overall: A very sweet movie.
Score: 9.5 Pegs out of Ten.

P.S.: Ferdy would like to extend his thanks to the producers of Stardust for using his name on one of the shops.
