Confused Americans for Truth - Iran Threatens the Kurds

by Ferdinand T Cat

Now, I know I'm supposed to think that Iran isn't a problem, and according to experts, Iran wants to see a stable and unified Iraq, but in spite of this I'm disturbed by reports that Iran is threatening military action against the Kurdish community in Iraq.

Kurdistan has completely embraced the ideals of democratic capitalism, but its pro-Western stance makes it vulnerable to accusations that it is conspiring with the Great Satan. Worse, anti-war activists have a need to see it fail. As a result, Iran has every reason to believe that an invasion of Kurdistan will force the United States to abandon the Kurds entirely.

There is a tendency to believe that war won't happen, mostly because there are so many books and movies in which international tensions are the work of evil conspirators who get killed by the hero before there's any real damage. That kind of thinking was supposed to end on September 11, 2001, but it keeps creeping back. In this case, the nutty conspirator is the actual President of Iran, a nation whose weapons have worked their way into the hands of Iraqi insurgents.

Of course, Turkey has real problems with the Kurds, and has refrained from translating those problems into an invasion. Also, Iran is known for making big promises which lead to small results. Still, I would feel more optimistic if the current raft of Presidential candidates or the Democratic leaders in Congress would make it clear that the United States would not tolerate an Iranian invasion of Iraq.

We really need to convince these people that we aren't wimps.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
