Adventures with Bruce - It's Been a Rough Weekend

by Ferdinand T Cat

Things are almost back to normal, but it's been a very unusual weekend.

Thursday afternoon, the power went off, and it remained off until a few hours ago. It could have been a lot worse: the power outage was local, and Bruce was able to keep working by camping out at a nearby Starbuck's. The big problem in this case is that I wasn't able to go with him and supervise.

Around Friday afternoon the backup battery on the sump pump failed, and we now have a foot of water in the basement. We expect we'll be a few days cleaning that up. Also, we have to restock the refrigerator. Thankfully the cat food is still good, but some of the cheese has spoiled. Words cannot describe the pain.

Bruce had the most problems: it is really hard to read by candlelight. You apparently need to have the flame between your eyes and the book, and since both the book and your shirt are flammable, there are some real dangers involved. Eventually, we found a flashlight that still worked and stuck it into the correct position with duct tape.

Bruce always says that for an average household, electricity does the work of 100 servants, and that's why a high quality of life is available to nearly everyone instead of the privileged few. Until I had to live without light and refrigeration and microwave ovens, I didn't really appreciate the truth of that statement. The was the first time in 25 years that this house has gone without power for more than a couple of hours, so I could very easily have gone my whole life without learning that valuable lesson, so in a way, I'm lucky.

(With enough brainpower, you can see the bright side in anything.)

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
