Confused Americans for Truth - The Cubs Factor and Clinton vs. Obama
Here in my house we're all Cubs fans. Though the players and managers of the Chicago Cubs keep changing, there is one inexplicable thing that never changes: when they get into the post-season, they always choke. At some point, they stop trying to win and start trying not to lose.
I believe this same line has been crossed by Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. They are now under the influence of The Cubs Factor.
It's easy to tell when a politician succumbs to The Cubs Factor: he or she promotes weird and contradictory policies in an attempt to please larger sections of the electorate. Hillary Clinton, a lifelong Cubs fan, is currently trying to explain why she was for the war before being against it.
Obama is different. His candidacy has always been a bit of an accident, and this has enabled him to run a bright, easy campaign based mostly on his personal charisma. By March, he seemed positively messianic.
Unfortunately for him, at some point in the past few months, Obama began to think of the nomination as something to lose, instead of something to win. At that moment, he fell victim to the Cubs Factor. Hence, the threat to invade Pakistan and the no-nuke option, both of which are policies far more specific than the airy plans which have characterized him to this point. This has given Hillary the ammunition she needs to discredit Obama and gain a better position for herself.
John Edwards, the official comic relief character in the Democratic field, had the had this to say.
The last thing we need is two presidential candidates fighting with each other, instead of fighting for the change we need in America. And, man, do we need change in the worst possible way.
The key word here is change, which means we must do something different, without getting specific as to what it is. This is an important point. The Democrats had no trouble getting elected in 2006 on an anti-Iraq platform, but every attempt to implement an anti-war strategy has failed. This is because it's easier to recognize a bad idea than it is to come up with a good one. So we have a political party that makes great-sounding campaign promises, but is totally ineffectual when it comes to implementing them.
An ineffectual Congress is tolerable, but an ineffectual Commander in Chief during wartime would be a disaster. I'm pinning my hopes for avoiding that disaster on The Cubs Factor.
Respectfully submitted,

Brilliant as usual, Ferdy. I have more epiphanies per issue at your blog than anywhere else!
And as usual, your point also applies to most of life.
Thanks.
