Catblogging - The Other Cat Takes a Bath
During the cleanup following the great storm a few weeks ago, The Other Cat got some unknown substance in her fur and stopped grooming herself. The Girl Who Feeds Me decided this was a problem, so she purchased some special cat shampoo and with the help of Barb and Maggie gave The Other Cat a bath. An excerpt of this experience is shown below.
In similar situations I use a combination of loud, multi-tonal yowls and rapid claw action to express my displeasure. This is an extremely effective technique, and I rarely have to go to the vet, take medication, or take a bath. The Other Cat is completely different. Having survived well into the feline equivalent of old age, she is infused with the belief that as long as The Girl is nearby, the discomfort is only temporary.
A similar syndrome infects American politics. As September 11 fades into distant memory, the idea of a global network of religious fanatics who want to kill us seems as trifle extreme, and in our minds we've begun to return to the soft easiness of the Clinton years, when the problem was a general resentment of our support for Israel and the idea of a rogue dictator giving nuclear weapons to terrorists only made sense in the context of a Tom Clancy novel.
Anyway, The Other Cat remains happy and safe, and to a disinterested observer there's nothing wrong with the warm fuzzy feeling she gets after a bath. She has a point, and she deserves credit for learning to suppress her natural instincts.
You and I, however, have a higher calling than learning and instinct-- the ability to reason. And reason tells me that the warm fuzzy feelings aren't always safe.
Respectfully submitted,
