EMAIL Hell - See the Video, Catch the Virus

by Ferdinand T Cat

Some time back we received a email warning that a giant tsunami was going to wipe out America. Well, actually, I'm not being specific enough. We got an email warning us about a tsunami predicted in the Bible, and we received a spam email about a different tsunami that turned out in fact to be an ad for storm doors.

I have a bit of a problem in this regard because there are people who do send me stories they think I'll find interesting. So I can't automatically classify every news item from an unknown source as spam. But since the tsunami incident, I've suspected everything that comes into our mailbox in the guise of a news story.

I mention this because I did not consider it beyond the realm of possibility that Britney Spears killed herself and then scrawled the number 666 on her forehead while a nurse recorded the entire thing on a cell phone camera. Let's face it: Ms. Spears has not been having a very good time in the past few days. Nonetheless, the story was a fake, and URL for the alleged video of the incident executes a script that attempts to deploy a virus on your PC.

So don't be fooled. Just because a news story appears plausible doesn't mean it's true.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
