Laura Ingraham - The Carbonite Backup Service

by Ferdinand T Cat

For some time now, Laura Ingraham has been advertising a web backup service called Carbonite. Several people have come to this site looking for information about it, so I thought I should do a quick review.

There are serious advantages to a web backup service. Backing up to an external hard drive is a good precaution, but as Francis Ford Coppola found out a few days ago, an external drive backup can get lost in the same fell swoop as the original computer. With a web backup, that's not a problem. If you know the right passwords, you can access your backups from anywhere.

Carbonite works, and you can configure it so that it does not put a strain on your PC; in other words, while it is running it is not going to slow down your other work. Bruce used it for several weeks without any problems. The one complaint he had is that you can't really customize it beyond a few simple settings. If you want to learn about any of the advanced features, you have to suffer through painfully slow audio-visual tutorials. Bruce was about one minute in to the tutorial about using the lock icon when he gave up and uninstalled the whole thing.

This is not a decision to be made lightly. Carbonite costs $49.95 a year. For other services, you can pay that much for a single month. Bruce is still looking for an alternative backup solution that he can afford.

So, this is the deal: If you want a web backup service that installs quickly and requires little or no tuning, then Carbonite may be just what you want. If, however, you're looking for something with a lot of options so that you can customize it thoroughly, and you are willing to pay the extra cost, then there may be a better product for you. I can't say that for certain, because we're still shopping, but it's gotta be out there somewhere.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
