Confused Americans for Truth - The New Obama Strategy
Stories like this have been appearing all weekend. Here's a typical quote.
"We’ve spent a lot of time laying the groundwork in terms of biography, and now as the leaves turn and the air gets cooler, there’s going to be more of an emphasis on the contrast between myself and the other candidates in the race," [Obama] said.
The problem is, when it comes to foreign policy, Obama counsels restraint. Apparently, restraint is not enough to take down Mrs. Clinton, which means she's more intractable than the government of Iran. I know many of you feel the same way, but it doesn't seem to be in Senator Obama's best interest to point it out. When you're fighting a war on terror, a scary president is better than a restrained one. The operative word is terror.
Obama argues that Clinton has been "back and forth" on Iraq and Iran, but in a sense, it doesn't matter what any of the Democrats say before the election. Congress has proven that there is a vast gulf between what you want to do, and what you can do. In the end, the only real difference is who's going to spend the most money. It's hard to differentiate on that basis. Would President Clinton be all that different from President Obama should somebody in Congress submit a John Edwards-style spending bill? Is there any difference between any of the Democratic candidates on, say, the S-CHIP bill?
It's different on the Republican side. Editorials on the death of the religious right have their root in the fact that we're all still evaluating the candidates in terms of their moral sense-- what's right and what's wrong. We rely on this moral sense because it places limits on what the government can do and what we need to protect.
So, look for more stories about new and exciting strategies by Democrats to make the campaign more interesting, but don't look for any actual excitement. For that, you need a whole different sort of party.
Respectfully submitted,
