Under the Peg - Anyone Know Last Rites?

by Peg-Eye Nate

Since I still hear this song on the radio, I figure it is still fair game for reviews: Hey There Delilah by the Plain White T's (lyrics available here, and same melody but enjoyable lyrics available here), is pure unmitigated torment.

As far as the music goes, I'm pretty sure the guitar comes with five strings as a standard, so there is absolutely no excuse to use only four notes.

On the subject of the lyrics, it is, in essence, a three-minute moan by the lead singer about how his girlfriend in not in arm's reach. Now that, in and of itself, is not what I'm objecting to. I completely understand the urge to lock yourself in a dark room and moan about how your girlfriend is not with you, but I don't record it. I feel having a full sound crew on hand diminishes the dignity of the act. The singer even uses the classic "I'll make it big someday," line. He assures Delilah he will someday make a living on his guitar, and as soon as she's out of school he'll be making history. In the realm of courtship, certain phrases and tactics are tantamount to suicide, and should be followed by your immediate retreat. When the phrase is Someday I'll be rich and famous, you can't run away fast enough. It's been said by just about everybody, and maybe three of them have actually managed to pull it off.

Speaking of running away, when Ferdy was teaching me about the Internet, he told me that anyone who says I should run away with them is dangerous, and I should alert the relevant authorities immediately. I'm pretty sure this advice applies to any form of long distance communication, so if you're out there, Delilah, call the police and have them lock these guys up. Any jury with music-lovers on it will have no problem voting to convict.

Score: One peg should be enough to pound any radio, CD, or stereo currently playing the track to a fine powder.
