Confused Americans for Truth - It's Time to Use a Secret Weapon in Pakistan
We have here a dilemma. On the one hand, Pakistan has been helping us against the terrorists. President Musharraf has exposed himself to criticism from his own people by being helpful to us. On the other hand, we are supposed to be opposing repressive dictatorships, the theory being that such dictatorships breed the terrorism we're trying to fight.
This sort of thing has happened before. Back in 1979, the United States became squishy in its support of the Shah of Iran. As a result, the Shah was replaced by a more virulent anti-American regime. It's tempting to cut Musharraf loose in the hopes that a new Pakistani government will be grateful for our restraint; however, the smart money would be on the new guys using anti-Americanism as a propaganda tool.
Here's my suggestion: to show our support for democracy, let's send Jimmy Carter to Pakistan to help the Pakistani dissidents. In the eyes of the international community, we will be clearly and obviously showing support for the concept of democracy instead of just engaging in lots of idle talk. There is no doubt in my mind that Carter will be just as successful in Pakistan as he was in North Korea. Musharraf, faced with a complete collapse of the opposition, will be able to call off the emergency measures. Carter may even get a second Nobel Peace Prize out of the deal.
When you're between a rock and a hard place you have to think outside the box.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat
