Ferdy at the Movies - Okay, I Think Phillip K. Dick Has Been Done to Death and We Can Move On Now
Bruce is a long-time science fiction fan and as a result he's seen almost every movie based on a Phillip K. Dick story. This is no easy task, as Hollywood has done about 15 Phillip K. Dick movies and there are more in the works. Worse, every Phillip K. Dick story is essentially the same: there's what is real, and what isn't real, and you have a hard time figuring out which is which. This was unique and exciting when Ambrose Bierce was doing it, but it's getting a little old for me. That has no effect on Bruce, though, who has the mind of a collector and has to see them all.
I mention this to explain how I ended up watching the recent Nicholas Cage film Next. Next was released this past April, and I am frankly surprised there were no news stories about irate audiences murdering the staff at the theatres where it was shown.
The story involves a Las Vegas magician who is able to see two minutes into the future. An FBI agent discovers his secret and tries to get him to help her find a nuclear bomb that has fallen into the hands of French terrorists.
The movie is approximately 96 minutes long. It takes 61 minutes for Cage's character to connect with the FBI agent, so we're two-third of the way through the film before the plot starts. There follows a solid half hour of typical action movie stuff, after which we find out that the last half hour was a dream. So, there is one actual minute of the real story before the credits come up.
The credits, by the way,are done backwards. This is almost clever, but it's hard to appreciate it because you're still furious that the actual story of this movie NEVER HAPPENED.
I mean, what were they thinking? Really, we have to find out how to stop these people before they do this again.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

Once again we are confronted by the Marxist leanings of our edu-propogandist system. No wonder. It is alright to have the children mock the Muslim religion by pretending to participate in it, you must, but any mention of our national anthem? OH M ...... [Read More]

Heh, that "this has all been a dream" has been a standby for science fiction since the first round of The Twilight Zone and the first generation of Star Trek.
And it is annoying as all hell every single time.
