Confused Americans for Truth - Say It Ain't So: New Poll Shows Republican Voters Favor McCain
Here's the story. Read it and weep.
Of course, the polls have not been covering themselves with glory lately, but just in case this is an accurate snapshot of voter sentiment, I thought I'd better put a damper on it.
Looking at John McCain's web site, he seems generally conservative, but I can't help remembering the betrayals-- the filibuster mess, McCain-Feingold, immigration reform. Of course, many other Republicans joined John McCain on these awful quests for bad legislation, but McCain was the guy in charge. That means something.
It is true that John McCain can get legislation passed, but it's legislation we don't want. In this respect, he's not all that different from Obama or Clinton.
What conservatives want, and what we're not seeing out there, is somebody who can get legislation we want passed. This has been a problem for a long time. Conservatives have a long history of betrayal at the hands of the GOP. Back in the Seventies, there was Richard Nixon, who presented himself as a conservative and then declared himself a Keynesian when he got into the White House. In the Nineties, there was the first Bush, who portrayed himself as a successor to Reagan and then caved to the Democrats on taxes. And of course, the Republican Congress that started out with such promise ultimately became just as profligate as the Democrats.
So, I can't blame Republicans for lacking enthusiasm. Still, handing Congress to the Democrats has not really helped, and handing the White House to John McCain isn't going to help either. This is the era of power to the people. A President that's an imperfect fit but feels a loyalty to conservatives can be kept in line by conservative activism. This won't work with McCain, who has every reason to be happy when you and I are pissed off.
Really, folks, even Rudy Giuliani would be a better choice. Rudy knows we're an important part of the party and will spend all his time trying to convince us we can trust him. As scary as Mike Huckabee is, he'd still feel a connection to us that we could use to make our influence felt.
John McCain is not the guy.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

I will NOT vote for this RINO, unless he's all we got in November ... (sigh)

Not to mention that McCain will gladly cripple the US economy for the sake of the phony global warming scare. If is is the Republican nominee, I will stay home for the first time in 30 years.

As usual, your analysis is right on the money, Ferdy. You've reminded me why I've never trusted John McCain to begin with. That's why I find the idea of him being a Republican frontrunner to be pretty scary.
This is also going to be the first presidential election where I'll be allowed to vote, but I'm kind of disappointed in the dearth of good candidates. I just hope I'll be able to register in time for the primary...
