The Human Element - God Bless You, Mr. Buckley
I was born in 1955. National Review has always been there for me.
National Review was where we met to talk things over. In its pages, conservatives debated everything from the proper use of commas to the imminent collapse of Western Civilization (which seemed a very real possibility during the Carter years). William F. Buckley sat atop it all, imprinting us with his calm, rational style. In 1955, Lionel Trilling announced that America had no conservative intellectual tradition. Fifty-three years later, it's our only intellectual tradition.
One man made that difference. He will be missed.
