Under the Peg - It Is That Time Of Year, After All
Valentine's day is breathing frosty puffs at the door, men. It's time to take the special lady in your lives to a romantic movie, something that will make her say "Aww that's so sweet," at least twice, and if you can sit through it without vomiting you'll score definite points. Lucky for you, I have an ace in the hole, a movie named Over Her Dead Body.
The movie starts during the preparations for the wedding between Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) and Henry (Paul Rudd). Kate is rushing every which way in an attempt to make sure everything is perfect for her wedding, and in the process shows herself to be loud-mouthed, inconsiderate and more than a little condescending. However, when she's dealing with Henry, she becomes sweet and considerate. The two of them would probably have made a wonderful couple, but we'll never get to know for certain, as she's crushed by an ice carving of an angel after she refuses to accept its delivery She wakes up in a white space with a woman who is remarkably identical to the statue that crushed her. The angel (Kali Rocha) tries to explain how Kate's existence will work now that she's dead, but can't get a word in edgewise. Meanwhile, Henry's sister, Chloe (Lindsay Sloane) talks Henry into seeing a medium to help him move on. Apparently in the year since Kate's death, Henry hasn't smiled, left his apartment, or talked to another human being outside of work situations. Ashley (Lake Bell) admits she isn't always right as a psychic but she's willing to help. After a failed session Chloe donates Kate's diary to help Ashley be more convincing in her attempts to contact Kate. Ashley doesn't want to lie, but she does want to help Henry move on, and not long after a seemingly successful communication with Kate, she and Henry start going out, and Kate's ghost shows up to make Ashley's life miserable.
The romance is a really big selling point in this movie. There are several really sweet moments between the main characters, and they do seem to genuinely care for each other. The moments of Awww are matched well with the times for laughing out loud. The movie is very funny, and manages to time the humor to avoid stifling the more serious moments in the film. Just to warn you though, they couldn't resist one gratuitous flatus gag. (It's the only one in the film, don't panic.) The characters are well done, which means Kate's attempts to be an insufferable pain can almost cause physical discomfort to the audience. The plot is pretty much you're standard romantic comedy fare. (It doesn't bother me, but I've heard some people are offended by non-originality.) If you're interested in making this a family outing, be prepared to answer one or two awkward questions from the little ones, In a general sense, the movie is worth seeing, and I highly recommend bringing your special someone along.
Overall: A nice feel good movie with a happy ending, perfect for a movie date.
Score: 9 pegs out of 10.
