The Cat's Meow - 03/27/08: Hands On

by Ferdinand T Cat
The essence of conservatism is skepticism. The essence of liberalism is control.

Read this Associated Press story about Barack Obama. Obama is proposing "tougher government regulations". You don't know what those regulations are going to be. That's okay, because Obama doesn't know either. The details of the regulations will be hashed out as part of a torturous process that begins with President Obama making a proposal to Congress and ends with mid-level bureaucrats adding new pages to the Federal Register. The average American will never know what those pages say or the effect they will have, but banks and lending companies will have to live with them for decades.

As a conservative, your immediate reaction is: this isn't going to work. You can't explain why it won't work because-- and this is the important point-- you don't know what the regulations are going to be. Obama doesn't see that as a problem, because any negative effect of the regulations can be fixed by fine tuning. If you're opposed to control, then you're guilty of just sitting back and "watching this crisis happen." How dare you oppose more regulation, you heartless conservative bastard. If you really cared about poor people, then you wouldn't mind giving up a little liberty to gain more security.

Okay, so I was being a little cute with that last sentence, but the point remains: they offer control; we offer doubt.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
