Force Football - Getting Ready for the Women's Tackle Football Season
Yesterday Bruce and Nate drove to Holmgren Field to see a full-contact scrimmage by the Chicago Force.
A scrimmage is essentially a football game where the team plays against itself. Because football strategy involves a heavy does of misdirection, a normal football game is tough to follow. A scrimmage, however, is complete chaos. The scoreboard doesn't tell you anything, there's no announcer to explain what you might have missed, and the players keep changing from one team to the other. Also, it's really hard to decide which team to root for.
There was a lot of passing practice. A forward pass in football allows a team to move a ball much further than a standard run through the opposing team's line; however, it should be mentioned that the concept is completely insane. The quarterback must throw the ball to a moving target while the primitive part of the brain is screaming about all the other people converging on her with hostile intent. The receiver must look toward the oncoming ball while running in a different direction and jinking left and right to avoid a similar cluster of hostile forces. There was a lot of heartbreak during passing practice, but also a lot of good plays, including an interception by veteran player Linda Bache.
The good news is that Pam Schaffrath is back on the team after spending most of last season on the bench with a broken foot. The bad news is that Esther Henigan hurt her arm and will be unable to play for the next few weeks. I would like to explain the injury in more detail, but all Bruce was able to tell me is that her description of the problem "had a lot of letters in it and began with A". This from a guy who does biology research.
Anyway, the season opener-- an away game against the Wisconsin Wolves-- is on April 12, less than two weeks from now, and one week after that-- April 19 at 7pm-- the Force play their home opener against the Detroit Demolition, the only team that was able to beat them last season. Defeating the Demolition is essential to any plan for obtaining the championship this year, so if you are anywhere in a 50-mile radius of Holmgren Field on April 19, please come out to cheer the team. Mark your calendars now.
Respectfully submitted,
Ferdinand T. Cat

John over at This Ain't Hell has some excellent links to articles covering this sham of an embarrassment. Rurik, unbeknownst to most, was able to mix in with the crowd and get some rather interesting tidbits about this gathering ... [Read More]
