Force Football - A Big Football Game in a Big Stadium

by Ferdinand T Cat

Yesterday Bruce and Nate drove to Iowa to see the Chicago Force play the Iowa Crush. The Crush are having a tough year, and the Force is having a great one, and the combination produced a lopsided win for the Force-- 56 to 0.

The Crush's home field is Valley Stadium. Valley Stadium is positively huge, and very modern-looking. It's very clean, too. In order to keep it that way, both cigarettes and sunflower seeds are prohibited. It turns out that when the stands reach a certain size, it becomes too much work to sweep up cigarette butts and sunflower seed husks.

I don't make these rules: I just try to figure them out.

Penalties were a big problem for the Force in this game. An early touchdown by Brandi Srda and a fantastic 90-yard touchdown run by Melissa Smith were negated by penalties.

The first touchdown that counted was by Esther Henigan, who had a lot of good plays in this game, including a 26-yard run in the second half. Esther had to miss the first few games of the season due to an arm injury, and her performance in this game proves she's all the way healed, which is good news.

There were five more Force touchdowns in the first half. The first was on a pass from quarterback Sam Grisafe to Angie Bandstra. The second was a run in by fullback Bridget Farhner from the 1-yard line. A few plays after that, Linda Bache intercepted a pass by the Crush, and Brandi Srda ran it for a first down. This set up a pass to Patricia Harper for the fourth touchdown in the first half. The fifth was a 40-yard run by Melissa Smith. The sixth, in the final few seconds, was by Brandi Srda. Peg-Eye Nate says it's bad luck to talk about streaks, so I will not mention the fact that Brandi has made a touchdown in every game this season, even though I think it's a really interesting fact that people should know.

At the end of the first half, the score was 42 to 0.

The problem up to this point was that the Crush offense simply couldn't make any headway. When the Force has the ball, there are all sorts of fakes, misdirections, and switches, so it is really difficult to tell who needs to be tackled and who's a red herring. The Crush's plays were so transparent that even Bruce could tell what was going on.

In the second half, the Crush began to fight back. They started making first downs, and got within 30 yards of the goal. Then, a tackle by Darcy Leslie switched the momentum. On the next play, Sofie Sianez executed a spin tackle that took down two Crush players at once. The Crush was now on its 4th down with 1 yard to go, but a swarm of defensive players stopped the rally, and the Force once again had the ball.

The third quarter was scoreless, but there were two more touchdowns in the fourth. The first was a touchdown run by Bridget Fahrner, and the last was a pass from Angie Bandstra to Patricia Harper. Both had scored in the first half as well, giving them each two touchdowns for the game.

This is the Force's last away game of the season, which is a good thing, since it's impossible for me to get a between-meal snack when Bruce isn't home. The next game is this Saturday the 31st against the Clarksville Fox. The Fox is a fairly new team (this is their second season), but they are undefeated so far this year.

The games are at Holmgren Field, on the north side of Chicago, and kick-off is at 3pm. Please stop by to see the game if you can. This is shaping up to be a very good season, and you don't want to miss it.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
