Confused Americans for Truth - The Tony Rezko Thing

by Ferdinand T Cat The headline in the L.A. Times describes Tony Rezko as an "Obama ally", but in fact, Rezko is just another one of the many Illinois citizens who unselflishly commit white-collar crimes to provide employment for federal prosecutors. In this case, Rezko is a stepping stone on the road to taking down Governor Rod Blagojevich. If the Feds turn Rezko against Blagojevich, Illinois could be the first state to have back-to-back governors in prison at the same time. No state is more suited to this unique accomplishment than Illinois.

I can see the press getting excited about taking down a presidential candidate, even the messianic Barack Obama, but the two-governors-in-jail thing is a much better story. It isolates the corruption in a state where people have more or less given up hope on that particular issue, and it still allows them to write the all-important news stories about the first African-American President. So I think it's a waste of time to try to get any Presidential campaign traction from Tony Rezko.

But a more important issue is the effect an Obama-Rezko link would have on campaign finance reform. Obama is already playing the reform card on Tony Rezko, and we all know that more campaign finance reform means less free speech. This is what happened in 2000 when Al Gore was under the microscope. Bruce never lets anybody forget that his employer was spiraling into bankruptcy while John McCain was explaining to President Bush that campaign finance legislation was more important than tax cuts to fix the economy. And, no matter what happens in November, Mr. McCain will be serving in Washington DC for the entire term of the 111th Congress, and he's still going to want to be involved in his signature political issue.

So, if you want to track the Tony Rezko story, here's the key Google search link.

When the future of free speech is at stake, there are some things it's best not to know.

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat
