Confused Americans for Truth - McCain Moving to the Right
Here's a question: if 2008 is the year of the liberal, why are both candidates moving to the right?
The theory is that you go to the extremes to get the nomination and then move back toward the center in order to win the election. Barack Obama has begun to look appealing to conservatives, so much so that the New York Times is really pissed off. So he's following the normal game plan. McCain, on the other hand, started in the center, so you'd think he'd be able to stay in place. But John Kerry has this to say.
John McCain has changed in profound and fundamental ways that I find personally really surprising,
These surprising changes are bad ones as far as Kerry is concerned, and while Kerry's condemnation of McCain has generally revolved around Iraq policy, McCain's Iraq policy has been pretty consistent, as Kerry points out in the following tirade.
John McCain . . . has proven that he has been wrong about every judgment he’s made about the war: wrong about the Iraqis paying for the reconstruction, wrong about whether or not the oil would pay for it, wrong about Sunni and Shia violence through the years, wrong about the willingness of the Iraqis to stand up for themselves.
So, McCain is upsetting his former friend because he's sounding conservative on domestic issues. This seems to be the case. He's starting to talk tough on immigration and he's talking about offshore oil drilling. He's even in favor of tax cuts.
McCain is doing this because the MIchael Medved model of a more moderate electorate was wrong. Yes, McCain won the nomination, but it certainly wasn't because he's a majority-maker. Otherwise, why bother flip-flopping?
So, both candidates are starting to look more conservative, and no, I'm not fooled by any of it, but the fact that it's happening is good news.
It means that you and I still matter.
