by Ferdinand T Cat
Liberals lost the sheen of patriotism when their message changed from America needs to be better to America is terrible.

McCain admits that it can be "tough" to be proud of America at times. Do conservatives, therefore, loose the "sheen of patriotism"?

No, because there is a difference between saying that you aren't always proud and saying that you've never been proud. I don't mind being told that America is not perfect: as a conservative, I believe no human institution can be perfect. Liberals, however, seem obsessed with blowing things out of proportion: McCain's been un-proud once, so he's just as bad as that Michelle Obama who's un-proud all the time. It's the same as saying that America was nice to Saddam back in 1982, so we have no right to criticize him for all the things he's done since then, or that because some of our intelligence was wrong, we should unconditionally hand Iraq over to the terrorists.
