Confused Americans for Truth - The Most Important Election in Your Lifetime

by Ferdinand T Cat

Honestly, it is really hard to come up with something original to say when all you're hearing is the same old nonsense over and over. Still, you can tell that something's reached a new level of banality when it headlines your daily cheap-drugs EMAIL spam. As much as I don't need anti-depressants and male enhancement drugs, they cross the line from annoying to painful when they begin with the most idiotic cliche of 2008:

This is the most important election in U.S. history.

Gag me with a vegetable.

Important elections are a sure sign that the government is too damn powerful. Still, this particular election is no more important than the strikingly similar one we had in 1976. At that time, we had a career Democrat running as an outsider promising change, and his opponent was a Republican moderate. We also had a general public unrest, and the economy was in pretty bad shape.

I'm not the first to see a parallel between Barack Obama and Jimmy Carter, but Bruce remembers those years vividly, and the most important election of his life was four years later, in 1980. In that year, Carter wasn't running against a moderate. There was a clear choice, and it was also pretty obvious that Carter's model of optimistic micromanagement wasn't working. Although no history book is going to tell you that 1980 was a vital turning point, people all over the world understood its importance, and they showed it the day Ronald Reagan died.

The outcome of this election is not certain, but it is probable that, like Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama will win. If he does, and if, like Jimmy Carter, he's able to implement his vision for America, things could get pretty bad, both here and overseas. In that case, 2012 will be a very important election. A lot more important than this one.

In the meantime, take a mental reality check: if this election were really about some big huge choice that will fundamentally change the direction of the country, why did the Palin-Biden debate get the big ratings?

Respectfully submitted,

Ferdinand T. Cat

I'd like to think that it'd be possible to have a fair election later if Obama wins this one. But I think that once the Chicago machine goes nationwide, there won't be any turning back. You should check out Fund's "Stealing Elections". It's one thing to have two parties compete for people's votes. It's quite another when one party threatens to never allow fair elections again.

Aside from that, if Obama wins we might as well give up on the idea of ever reforming the court.

Dearest Ferdy,

While we have tried to be so very patient, lo these last ten days since you graced us with your wisdom, we are withering and dying without it. I fear we are dying. Please don't trouble yourself or that genome-juggling Bruce with anything deep or philosophical. No, no, just dash off a quick little post that will enlighten us as to the true significance of Joe the Plumber. Or tell us what you thought of Gov. Palin on SNL. Tell us anything you want, just tell us something. My highest respects to your superior self.
